Creating subdocuments

Subdocuments are child documents that are linked to parent documents. Subdocuments are not contained within their parent documents in the same way that subfolders are contained within parent folders. Subdocuments are useful for linking related documents in a hierarchy such as CAD assemblies, subassemblies, and parts. Another example is site plans, floor plans, and details. The document- to-subdocument relationships help to indicate where documents are used by other documents and might be interdependent.

To create a subdocument:

  1. In the navigation pane, select the folder where the parent document is located.
  2. In the Documents view, select the document name, or on the Actions menu, select View. The document's property page appears in the detail pane.
  3. In the ribbon, in the Document group, click Create subdocument. A new document property page appears with the Lifecycle, Relevance, and Access profile values copied from the parent document.
  4. Click options or type values for the subdocument using the descriptions in Viewing and editing document properties.
  5. Click Save. The subdocument's full property page appears showing the parent document's information in the Parent documents property in the Links section.
